Lower Buchanan, Grand Bassa County: District # 4 Representative, Gabriel Smith reported to his constituents of his progress during the past three years as Representative of District #4, Grand Bassa County. He also praises Bassa groups in the USA.

It appears that the days of tyranny and imperial presidency is dramatically becoming history in post conflict Liberia.

Today, many Legislators feel highly accountable to their constituents by making regular visits as possible, despite the difficult situation interns of impassable roads and economic degeneration.

They have now understood lawmaking: making laws, having oversight of the executive and judiciary branches of government and representation of their people, thanks to the National Democratic Institute and other partners who are making this happen.

District # 4 Representative, Gabriel Smith was seen in the port city of Buchanan explaining to his people his undertakings since he took the helm of authority in 2005.

Hon. Smith named the challenges which are obvious in a country just coming out of fourteen years of war but was highly positive of recuperation.

The Bassa lawmaker named his achievements as the giving of scholarships, provision of educational materials and donation of several computers for research.

Under this new dispensation he said, the issue of county development was key to breaching the poverty line of striving constituents.

He said the 52nd National Legislature saw it prudent introducing this line in the budget so as to buttress the government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy.

Under this new scheme, constituents themselves will participate in the decision making process, as to what they need as a people.

Roads rehabilitation, health care delivery system, and education enhancement are reported of being key to this new process.

Rep. Smith however asked the support of fellow Bassa citizens in reconditioning the Buchanan-Tubman street road, cleaning the streets as a sign of welcoming back our diasporas for several activities this season.

He used the occasion to praise Bassa organizations in the U.S for their continuous support to their homeland.

This support he said gives the feelings of oneness and fostering of blessing and prosperity to the Bassa land.

The meeting at the Buchanan Fair ground was witnessed by members of the National Democratic Institute, the Superintendent’s office, the Grand Bassa University Student Union that goes to convention in Bassa on the 26th of December, elders of the land, educators, journalists etc.

During the exercise, Hon. Smith honored former lawmaker in his late 70s, Borbor Sayku for his wisdom and unflinching support to the county.

The Grand Bassa Dist. #4 lawmaker said negotiations were on going with his German counterparts in re-establishing the German mission on the Monrovia-Buchanan Highway.

This discussion was started upon a recent visit to Germany and is expected to be concluded in weeks.
